The Word Behind It

Shamar is a Hebrew verb that means to guard, to keep, to protect, to watch over. It is the word God used when he told Adam to tend the garden. It is the word used when a man stands between what he loves and what threatens it.

Most men were never told what they are supposed to guard. This devotional is a 365-day reckoning with that question — and a daily discipline for the man ready to answer it.

Week 1 Theme: The Charge
Named Before You Were Known

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

Jeremiah 1:5

Jeremiah's first instinct was to disqualify himself. Too young. Not eloquent enough. Wrong moment. God's response was not reassurance — it was a statement of fact. The calling preceded the man. The appointment had already been made. Jeremiah's reluctance did not change the record; it only delayed the response. Many men live inside a version of that delay. They are waiting to feel ready, feel worthy, feel certain. None of those feelings are the prerequisite. The identity came first. The charge follows from what you already are, not from what you manage to become. This is where the year begins.

The Charge

Write down three ways you have disqualified yourself from something you know you are called to do. For each one, ask whether the disqualification is real or whether it is just reluctance wearing the mask of humility.
